Cantaloupes - 34 weeks
34 week appointment today went well. Their heart rates are 140 (her) and 129 (him), they both have plenty of fluid around them and their placentas look good.
The appointment started off with the Doc saying I may be able to be seen in 2 weeks instead of next weeks since everything has gone so smoothly so far and then I asked her to check my cervix...
She looked a little surprised to inform me I was 3cm dilated and 90% effaced with a bulging water bag. I asked what that meant and if we should expect the babies soon and she said that could be indicative that things are starting to progress but I could also walk around for the next few weeks at 3-4 cm dilated. So basically with twins this could mean they could come this week or three weeks from now, not the best news when trying to plan the arrival of everyone but with monitoring and rest we should hopefully have a good warning period before the twins make their debut.
The doc decided I should get the steroid shots just to be safe in case the babies come in the next two weeks, to give their lungs a boost and potentially have less complications if they do come early. I was sent straight to the hospital where they monitored the babies heart rates and any possible contractions for about 10 minutes before giving me the first shot. The babies still looked great without any distress and there were some slight contractions which she said are expected at this point but were not effecting the babies or predictive of early labor. I go back tomorrow at the same time to get the second shot and then should be good to go until the next check up at Maitri, as long as no other symptoms present. I may ask for another cervix check tomorrow, if the doctor agrees, just to make sure things are not actually progressing too fast. Since I have not been checked yet, it is not known how long I have been dilated. I could have been 3cm for the last two weeks or the last two days so I am curious what it will be tomorrow, and will feel a bit more comfortable knowing there has not been progression in the last 24 hours.
What I was told to watch for were my water breaking, bright red bleeding or not feeling the babies move, which could all indicate labor. And I can say the babies are definitely still moving around all the time and seem content where they are.
I asked if I should expect bed rest and was told at my OB office and the hospital that since we are at 34 weeks with twins, they would not try to stop labor at this point so they will not be requiring bed rest. However, our plans are to keep those babies in there for at least another two weeks so I plan to take a half day tomorrow at work and see how I feel going forward since rest can help prevent "pre-term" labor. I am hoping to work right up until they come, and have trained the doctors to come to me with questions on patients to limit my walking around the office (I work with a great team!). I hope to take it as easy as possible at work, but also plan on seeing how I feel each morning and really making sure to rest when I feel a little off.
So fingers (and legs) crossed the little ninjas stay put for another few weeks at least!
Next appointment with Maitri is August 6th for their growth scan.
Weight: 179
Belly measuring 43 weeks pregnant
Feeling: out of breath! My lungs cant really expand all the way so it is harder to get a deep breath, which can leave me a bit light headed with exertion or talking a lot. I try to take advantage of any small burst of energy to get some things done around the house or run errands but get a little frustrated when my energy runs out and my projects are not completed.
Babies: Your babies are about 18 inches long and weigh in at about 4.75 pounds.
Their fat layers – which will help regulate the body temperature once born – are filling them out, making the babies rounder. The skin is also smoother than ever. Their central nervous system is maturing, and the lungs are continuing to mature as well. You'll be happy to know that babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems generally do fine. They may need a short stay in the NICU and may have a few short-term health issues, but in the long run, they usually do as well as full-term babies.
