Cauliflowers - 25 Weeks
It seems as though I have got to the point in pregnancy where if I drop something, I call it a loss and walk away. Bending over becomes a bit more of a challenge each day, because of comfort but also my lungs get squeezed like a whoopee cushion when I bend down. Also, walking upstairs leaves me breathless just because my lungs cant fully inflate. However, there are times when I get in just the right position to allow my lungs to expand enough to actually take a deep breath and those moments are magical! I have kept a close eye out for swelling and while I don't notice any visually, it does feel like my shoes fit a little bit tighter and there are some days when it is harder to get my ring back on.
The babies continue to swim and kick around like crazy, and while painful at times, it is reassuring to feel their movement. Each week that passes is one week closer to happy, healthy babies when they come out. (Only!) 13 weeks to go. However, the 25 week mark is a bit a of a milestone as the babies should now be viable and all organs have developed enough to give a chance at survival outside the womb. While I plan on keeping the little ones in there for quite a bit longer, there is comfort knowing we have hit 25 weeks.
Next appointment with Maitri is June 5th for their growth scan.
Weight: 169
Feeling: Pregnant with twins, but overall very good. One thing that is a little different from other pregnancies is that I have to pee, a lot! I guess that with two babies pushing down on my bladder that will happen. I am glad to have gotten away with not having to get up at night for the first five months but I guess that is over now. Can't complain though since I am still getting a decent amount of sleep even having to get up a couple of times a night.
Babies: Your babies are about 13.6 inches long and weigh in at about 1.5 pounds.
The babies are enjoying their new sense of equilibrium—a 25-week fetus learns which way is up and which is down and are growing more fat and more hair too.
Your
babies are growing by leaps and bounds, reaching 13 inches (over a foot
long!) in length and about a pound-and-a-half in weight — taller
than two juice boxes stacked one on top of the other and almost as heavy
as four of them. Their skin is turning pinker — not because they are getting overheated (in fact, the
amniotic fluid is perfectly climate-controlled, keeping them at an always
comfortable temperature), but because small blood vessels, are forming under the skin and filling with blood. Later
this week, blood vessels will also develop in their lungs,
bringing them one step closer to full maturity — and one step closer to
taking that first breath of fresh air. But at 25 weeks pregnant, those
lungs are still very much works-in-progress. Though they are already
beginning to produce surfactant, a substance that will help them expand
with oxygen after baby is born, the lungs are still too undeveloped to
sufficiently send oxygen to the bloodstream and release carbon dioxide
when they exhales.
The lungs aren't the only system that's gearing up for air intake. Your babies' nostrils and nose are starting to work this week. That allows your little ones to begin taking practice breaths. Of course since there's no air in there, your baby is really only "breathing" amniotic fluid. Baby could also be able to smell various scents in utero by this week, too, and if not that sense will kick in by the third trimester.
